MIFFEST chairperson and founder Joanne Goh announced on Monday that the upcoming edition of the festival, which was scheduled for 5-10 December 2020, would be delayed because of the current nationwide cinema closures, which are imposed to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.
“As the film festival will physically take place at local cinemas, the festival committee has decided to postpone the event until 2021,” Goh said.
The MIFFEST would be rescheduled for January 2021, but the fate of the festival will be subject to cinema availability by then.
The flu-like deadly virus first emerged in China late last year and has now infected millions of people and killed hundreds of thousands across the world.
The pandemic impacted many events and forced the cancellation or the postponement of many festivals.
